The latest crime figures by Dublin City Council show a 30% increase in burglaries in the south Dublin area for the first quarter of 2015 compared to the same period for 2014.
The increase in burglaries is based on burglaries investigated by Gardai in the Pearse Street and Donnybrook stations.
The increase in burglaries from 147 to 191 occurred when a specific Garda operation to combat burglaries in Dublin area had been in force.

Assaults were also up 11% from 47 to 52 recorded incidents while there was a 21 % decrease in vehicles theft from 116 to 91.

In response to a recent parliamentary question from TD Thomas Broughan, Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald said she is carrying out a “broader and urgent review” of the criminal justice system’s response to the problem of burglaries.
“This includes a focus on interagency measures in relation to the management of prolific offenders, visible policing, crime prevention support for communities, and an examination of legislative issues. Burglary is a persistent and highly damaging crime, and I am determined to tackle it on a number of fronts, and through a partnership approach between criminal justice agencies and the community.”

Garda operation Acer which was set up in 2012 has resulted in 5,389 arrest over the three year period resulting in 2,746 charges and 1,087 convictions for burglary.

The Gardaí have advised the public to remain vigilant at all time and to report any suspicious activity.
